Elderly Home Care

Sometimes, after an elderly person is dismissed from a hospital, they will qualify for elderly home care. This health care enables the person to live at home with the supervision of a health care professional.

After the older person get home, the health care nurse will come by the house to evaluate the situation and decide how many times she should visit the home and exactly what care is needed. Most elderly people need to have their blood pressure checked, any wounds cleaned and evaluated, and all vitals checked. If the older person is ok, the nurse will write a report and leave the home. If the check-up shows that the elderly person has health problems sufficient for hospitalization, the nurse will call the doctor and make the needed arrangements.

Sometimes an elderly person also qualifies for a home care aid to come to the house for less medical needs. The aid will wash the patient, wash her hair, change her clothes, check her wounds and any other necessary care.

Without care, many elderly people would have to go to a nursing home. Most elderly people would rather stay home if at all possible.

If the patient has family, they too can help with the elderly home care. When their parent doesn’t qualify for paid health care, family members will join together to provide care. If there is enough money, they might even hire an aid to help with the care.

Meals on Wheels is a wonderful help if the elderly person qualifies. Someone from Meals on Wheels comes by the house to bring hot meals each day of the week. When some people found out that elderly people often shared their food with their pets, they worked to also provide food for pets. There are several charities to help with this problem.

As long as possible elderly people want to live at home. Elderly home care allows these elderly people to live alone and not have to move to a nursing home.
